About the Department

• The Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion is established on April 2026 to provide patient care services, education, and research in transfusion medicine.
• The Hospital Blood Centre functions round the clock and cater to both inpatients and outpatients.

Academic Programme

The department proposes to offer MD in Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion, a three-year postgraduate programme. The training includes laboratory work, clinical postings, seminars, journal clubs, and dissertation work as per the prescribed curriculum.

Blood Centre Facilities

• Blood Centre with component preparation and storage facilities
• Immunohematology laboratory for grouping, cross matching, and antibody testing
• Apheresis facility for single donor platelets, stem cell collection and therapeutic apheresis
• 100 % Blood Component transfusion services
• Screening for transfusion-transmitted infections
• Hemovigilance and transfusion reaction workup
• The laboratory participates in internal and external quality assurance programmes
• Outreach programme including Blood Donation Drive and motivation, recruitement.

Bone Marrow / Stem Cell Transplantation

• Yenepoya Medical College offers comprehensive bone marrow/stem cell transplantation services, including both autologous and allogeneic procedures.
• The transplants are performed by a team consisting of consultant hematologist, Immunohematology & Blood transfusion specialists and specialized technologists, focusing on blood and bone marrow cancers.

Immunohaematology Services

• Active Collaboration with Clinical Hematologist and Oncologist for advanced diagnostic workup and patient management.
• Availability of advanced laboratory facilities, including High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and coagulation services.

Community Engagement

The Blood Centre conducts voluntary blood donation camps in association with MSW department, NSS and other service organizations.
