GENERAL MEDICINE

The Department of Medicine has been functioning in Yenepoya Medical College Hospital since1999. The Department gets large number of complicated referral cases. Department has state of the art ICU with 17 beds. In order to cater to the extra patients, department has started a 13 bedded well equipped step down ICU. The Department also manages Casualty and Emergency Medicine. Department runs special clinics such as Nutrition, Infectious Diseases, Diabetes and Endocrinology clinic, Rheumatology clinic, and Hematology clinic. The Department participates in research activities such as clinical trials, clinical research on topics such as scrub typhus, TB Nutrition, Dengue fever and Malaria and also on chronic disease in collaboration Yenepoya Research Centre. Departmental staff is committed to teaching both Postgraduates and Undergraduates. Innovations in teaching include case based teaching, Simulation classes, ECG Workshops, Lab data interpretation workshops and ABG analysis. Management Guidelines, antibiotic policies are discussed and adopted for the department. The Department is ably supported by meritorious faculty, who are distinguished physicians with special interest in diabetology, Geriatric Medicine, Medical Ethics, Nutrition infectious disease, Haematology and Clinical trial. Department supports centre for clinical trials, centre for nutrition and centre for ethics.

Core competencies:

  • Department faculty have core competencies in providing emergency care, excellent out patient care, acute care and long term care and palliative care. Department runs courses in Geriatric palliative care and Psychodrama through which all the physician are trained. Emergency care and critical care is supported by department staff round the clock.

Key features:

  • The department was recognized for contribution to Geriatric care by Government of Karnataka by an award on world Elders day. Department was recognized as the department with best Research potential by Yenepoya University. Department has 6 funded ongoing research projects. The largest of the job is a 5.5 crore grant from ICMR for the “RATION” study on TB nutrition awarded to Dr Anurag Bhargava.

Collaborations:

  • Department collaborates with MEDIACION Germany for Palliative care and Psychodrama course.

Programmes run by the department:

  • Department teaches 250 medical students 12 postgraduates of M.D Medicine with innovative teaching methods including weekly simulation classes. Additional faculty from medicine takes classes for dental and physiotherapy students.
