PATHOLOGY

The Department of Pathology was established in the Medical College in 1999 to provide patient care services, education and research. The Faculty are actively involved in activities such as teaching, training, diagnosis and research. The department is involved in teaching postgraduates in Pathology as well as undergraduates in medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy and other allied health disciplines. They pursue various research activities and have published books and papers in national and international journals. Several CMEs, workshops and guest lectures have been conducted over the years. The Hospital Laboratory and Blood Centre function round the clock and cater to both inpatients and outpatients.

  • To provide effective teaching learning activities for the undergraduate & post graduate students.

Objectives

  • To emphasize the coordination and interdependence of the various functions (diagnostic, academic & research) of the Pathology department and clinical departments to achieve effective and efficient patient care.
  • To teach basic concepts about human diseases theoretically as well as practically.
  • To provide integrated educational experience to students during the specified duration of the course.
  • To give students an opportunity to participate in the ongoing research programs conducted in the department.

LABORATORY FACILITIES

  • Hematology and Clinical Pathology: A well-equipped NABL accredited Hospital laboratory provides a wide array of services functioning 24x7.
  • Cytopathology: Fine needle aspiration cytology with cell block, body fluid cytology, and PAP smear and various other diagnostic facilities are available.
  • Histopathology section handles numerous specimens and has extensive immuno-histochemistry markers to aid in definite diagnosis.
  • Frozen section is equipped with two cryostat and skilled technicians.
  • Immunofluorescence for renal biopsies.
  • Blood centre: A state of the art Blood Centre with component separation facility, and storage. Also using Fresenius Kabi – Com. tec cell separator to prepare single donor platelets and peripheral stem cell collection using Apheresis Technology.
  • Lymphocyte crossmatching for renal transplant.
  • Laboratory also actively participates in internal & external quality assurance programs to enable us to keep the standards high

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The YMCH Blood Centre conducts regular voluntary blood donation camp in association with MSW department, NSS and other service organizations.
