Clinical Training/Observership for Foreign Medical Practitioners
Our esteemed institution stands as a proud constituent unit of Yenepoya (Deemed to be
University), which has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council
(NAAC) with an impressive "A+" grade and CGPA points of 3.47, as evaluated in the year
2022. Established in 1999, we are privileged to commemorate the year 2024 as our silver
jubilee year.
Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru, is dedicated to offering state-of-the-art learning
facilities to its students. Our campus boasts a 1268-bedded NABH accredited hospital, a
world-class simulation and skill laboratory, a unique advanced surgical skill enhancement
division, a central library, and cutting-edge research and innovation facilities. Additionally,
we take pride in our five peripheral health centres, 31 satellite sub-centres, modern
classrooms, and practical laboratories. At Yenepoya Medical College, we offer
undergraduate, postgraduate and super-specialty programs recognised by National Medical
Commission with 250 MBBS admissions, 107 MD/MS admissions and 07 M Ch./DM
admissions every year. Department of Pulmonary medicine is offering MD Program from the
year 2007.
Scope and need for starting the course:
- This course offers the participants a very significant opportunity to gain firsthand
experience in diagnosis and management of vast variety of respiratory diseases by the way
of observation, assistance under supervision, etc. The department is in good position to
offer this opportunity to the needy health care professionals and optimally utilize the
available resources and the clinical material. This course can potentially enable the
participants in betterment of their routine clinical practice.
For whom is it meant:
- MD in Respiratory Medicine, General Medicine, Family Medicine or equivalent degrees
recognized by the respective National Medical Councils/ Competent authorities.
How many candidates can join the Clinical Training/ Observership at a
given time?
- Two candidates can join at a given point of time.
Course Fees
- 500 USD Per week (Training, Accommodation and Food)
Training Facilities for Observership/ Clinical Training
Faculty:
- The department is having six well experienced faculties with master’s degree in
respiratory medicine. One faculty is having PhD as an additional qualification.
Clinical material
- The department caters to a large group of population spread across multiple adjoining
districts. The department witnesses a strong footfall with daily average of 70+ out-
patients and 25+ in-patients which gives a great opportunity to the learners for
acquiring in-depth knowledge and experience regarding almost all varieties of
respiratory diseases.
Teaching/ Learning Facilities
- The department routinely conducts under graduate and post graduate teaching
programs as per the norms set by the National Medical Commission (NMC), India.
Infrastructure
- The department has all requisite infrastructure required to cater to the needs of patients
as well as students under various programs like MBBS and MD.
Equipments
- The department hosts regular services like Spirometry, DLCO, piCOsmokerlyzer
device to aid smoking cessation activities, flexible adult bronchoscopy. The special
services offered by the department are, Thoracic ultrasound, Allergy Skin Prick
testing, Level 1 Polysomnography, dedicated 5 bedded respiratory ICU with invasive
as well as non-invasive ventilation facilities. Apart from this, the department also
provides services for diagnosis and management of Tuberculosis as per National
Tuberculosis Elimination Program of India, Intercostal Tube Drainage, Pleural
Aspiration, Pulmonary Rehabilitation and intends to start Interventional Pulmonology
services in the near future.
Research facility
- The department actively takes part in research activities on stand-alone basis as well as
in collaboration with other departments within the Yenepoya University and external
research institutions.
Objectives/Outcomes of the course:
At the end of this course, the participants are expected to be able to
- Demonstrate enhanced understanding of basic sciences, routine diagnostic and
therapeutic procedures and management in the field of Pulmonary Medicine
appropriate to the level of learning needs.
- Provide assistance in resuscitation of the critically ill and provide respiratory support
under supervision.
Duration of the Observership
- Minimum 3 to Maximum 6 weeks
Attendance requirements:
- Average 80% attendance
Course content:
- Obstructive airway diseases, Restrictive lung diseases like ILD, Malignant conditions of
the lung and pleura, Infectious diseases of the lung and pleura especially Tuberculosis,
Respiratory Emergencies, Sleep apnea and related conditions, Systemic diseases with
respiratory involvement.
Teaching -Learning modalities:
- Attending the outpatient department, Grand rounds, ICU Rounds, Therapeutic and
diagnostic procedure observation and assistance under supervision, Journal club,
Seminar.
Assessment:
- Maintenance of E-Portfolio
